Greeny Crafter - Offsquare

Last Saturday was very exciting, not to mention extremely busy. A group of us had organised the Singapore event for Fashion Revolution Day. Here's a video of the fashion show organised by local ethical fashion label, Etrican. We had a group of dancers model the clothes (inside out, of course!) and do a dance number afterwards.  More details later! But first, let me introduce you to this week's Greeny Crafter, Katrina of Offsquare.

DIY Upcycled Shirt to Pillow Cover

Do you like the look of my revamped blog so far? I decided to do a bit of housecleaning after I attended the Singapore Mom Bloggers first event a few weeks back - I think all of us were raring to go with our new blog ideas.  The revamp is taking a bit of time because I'm using Blogger rather than Wordpress.  And because of the choice of platform, I am having so much trouble organising my posts into categories! I wish I had paid more attention to them when I first started blogging. I'll get there eventually, so please bare with me.

Fashion Revolution Day - 2 Ways to Get Involved!

Fashion, can it be a force for good?

Last year, on the 24th April, the Rana Plaza factory complex in Dhaka, Bangladesh collapsed, killing 1133 people and injuring thousands more, many of them garment factory workers. Events such as this bring with them the realization that the majority of us do not know how or where our clothes have been produced, nor are aware of the devastating impacts the fashion industry can have. As a global annual event, Fashion Revolution Day is an opportunity to celebrate fashion as a positive influence, raise awareness of the fashion industry's most pressing issues, show that change is possible and celebrate those who are on a journey to create a more ethical and sustainable future for fashion.

Yarn bombing Singapore

It seems like the interest towards knitting and crochet as a hobby has been rekindled in Singapore! I think it has to do with the fact that this craft can also have guerilla tendencies. When I read that a lady in Hong Kong was yarn bombing public areas, I thought it would be great to do it in Singapore. I dropped a line to my friends organising the Singapore  Mini Maker Faire, enquiring whether a group of yarn enthusiasts could yarn bomb the event. Although we couldn't get permission from the venue owner, The Singapore Science Centre has kindly offered to host the yarn bombing! Woo hoo!

Greeny Crafter - Rude Record

I'm so sorry that this post is late. It usually goes up early Monday but I was having problems logging into my blog. It's now okay but I suspect it's something to do with my computer being upgraded to the Windows 8 platform. Well, it really hasn't been helpful these past few days - grrrr!

This week's Greeny Crafter is Karen Ellis of Rude Record. I "met" her through social media when she invited me to join her Facebook group, Bowerbirds Journal. Through her posts, I discovered that she dumpster dives, or rather skip scavenges, on a regular basis, something that I don't think is common in Singapore. Read more about her skip scavenging below!

UnEarthed Exhibition, Singapore Art Museum

To be honest, I'm not a fan of contemporary art so I was very surprised that I actually enjoyed the UnEarthed Exhibition at the Singapore Art Museum. Perhaps it is because the exhibition had an environmental theme to it. The UnEarthed Exhibition offers insights as to "how artists living in Singapore's urban environment view and respond to the natural world." Here are a few of my favourites.

The effects of Singapore's "environment" on children.
Singaporean kids these days are under immense stress from the day they start kindergarten (no joke), and it boils and simmers throughout their childhood. The artist likens it to a piece of knitting - a lot of tension! The knitting is also green to highlight that our environment is also under stress the same way our children are, and of course, it is all due to man.

Greeny Crafter - Raag and Bone

My first upcycling project was to make a writing desk out of this discarded pine wood crate cover.

I was at the Unearthed Exhibition at the Singapore Art Museum last Friday. The amazing thing was I actually enjoyed the exhibit. Usually, I don't really understand contemporary art so this was a surprise for me! Will blog about it soon.

This week I have a male greeny crafter, Lim Zhen Xiong,  who blogs at Raag and Bone. I actually met him at my first Singapore Maker Meet and found out that he loves to upcycle as well, except that he deals more with glass and wood.  I am really excited about his work, and very happy he agreed to be interviewed. Look out for the glass-cutting tip!
